According to the Trade Office, on March 27, 2026, the European Commission (EC) officially initiated a safeguard investigation into certain electrical steel products, including oriented flat-rolled silicon steel, steel parts used for transformers and inductors.
The investigation was conducted at the request of several EU member states in the context of a sharp increase in imports of these products. Specifically, from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025, imports of the investigated products increased by 109% and 82% respectively.
The EC stated that if the investigation confirms that the increase in imports is causing serious damage to the domestic industry, safeguard measures could be applied within nine months, expected to begin in December 2026.
The Vietnamese Trade Office in Belgium believes that the EU is increasingly using trade defense tools to protect its domestic steel industry, including maintaining and planning to extend safeguard measures applied since 2018, as well as similar measures against other metal products recently. These actions could create certain risks for steel exporters to this market in the future.
